6 Key Skills developed in a Vision Quest Camp

With my Vision Quest camps coming up I have received a lot of interest and a lot of questions. One of the consistent questions being, “what will be some skills I develop at a Vision Quest Camp?”. I am hoping this blog post will detail a little bit about the skills you develop, and also how they play into organizational success.

I often say “Leadership is a choice, not a formal position” and I say this because it is true. I have seen it with my own eyes, and it has been shown in studies. Research by Barnes and Krieger determined that previous leadership research was insufficient because it relied on models of one leader/many followers. According Barnes and Krieger, leadership is more of a reflection of an organization, rather than a person. In other words, in the most successful organizations, leaders’ roles overlap, and different people take on leadership roles at different times.

What the Vision Quest Camps aim to do is to give youth the personal skills needed to succeed in different leadership roles in different situations.

This is done by focusing on building six key personal skills:

  1. Creating confidence- Confidence is one of the most sought-after personality traits in all aspects of life. It is important to note the difference between confidence and arrogance, and in the Vision Quest Camps we focus on developing the former. With a strong sense of confidence, you won’t be afraid to step into unfamiliar situations and be yourself. More importantly you will be able to be a leader; or take a contributing backseat role when needed.
  2. Building morale- The way I look at morale is synonymous with confidence and enthusiasm. Building morale in yourself is massively beneficial to working in a team/organizational setting because it is often an infectious quality. If you have high morale, chances are everyone in your team will be in high spirits as well.
  3. Finding your Passion– Two aspects that are key development points at a Vision Quest Camp are personal development and introspective skills. We will find what it is in life that you are passionate about. We will find what in life are your strengths and weaknesses. Once you understand your passion you can start to focus on how you can achieve your goals by relying on your strengths and avoiding playing to your weaknesses.
  4. Setting Personal Standards– In a vision Quest Camp you will learn how to hold yourself to the highest standard. You will see yourself with confidence, not hubris, and hold yourself responsible for living up to the standards you set. The idea behind this being, these standards will apply to all factors and aspects of life and keep you disciplined to follow your passions and hit personal achievements.
  5. Holding yourself accountable– When you say you want something, you have to go out and do the work to get whatever it is you want. A Vision Quest Camp will help you with the first part, discovering your passion and your goals. More importantly though, you will learn to hold yourself accountable for living the life you want to live. You are in the driver seat of your life and you have to realize you are accountable for the achieving your goals and vision.
  6. Being focused– Success doesn’t come easy. I like to talk about how success is a lot like an iceberg. People see what is on top and marvel at the size of the iceberg, but there is so much more to it below the water. That is exactly like success. People see success and assume it is natural and easy. Along the way there is failure, setbacks, and a loss of motivation. Being able to stay focused will help you get through all of these minor challenges you face along the way and help you reach the success you want to reach in life.
